As the temps dropped this morning, I realized that I could give you all some good advise and suggestions.
Do you have a farmer or other person who works outside in your life? Do you struggle to find good gifts for them?
I’m a firm believer in giving gifts of use. For the farmer who is an active researcher and reader, a new book available for beef, poultry, or other meat animal production might be a great option. Same goes for anything soils, crops or amendments.
Then there are the things that farmers can never have enough of. We usually destroy our wearable goods before most others would. Zippers break and pockets rip. Insulated bibs, jackets and long johns are always useful in winter months, as are boots.
One item that never lasts long is gloves! I can’t seem to find any that last longer than a month. Same thing for heavy insulated socks.
Heavy hooded sweatshirts are always handy to have too. They work great for layering. Good turtlenecks save wearing scarves that can catch on all kinds of crap.
Insulated coffee mugs and thermos items are a must for us too. If it keeps liquids hot….we LOVE them!
For the farmer or farm wife that loves to cook…those crock pot and thirty minute recipe books are always good to have too. Try to find ones that a person working 12-18 hours a day could use.
Other good things are boot jacks and boot scrubs.
Hope these help you with your shopping issues this holiday season, including our own families. We really aren’t that hard to buy for as long as you keep our daily basic needs in mind.
We’ve been posting some photos on our Instagram and Facebook pages about the cattle and their winter choices and preferences. I’ve had various people from all over the world comment about their cattle and if they go outside and graze or stay inside to just eat and lounge around.
Here is what we have discovered over the past couple of years in our attempt to gain more days of grazing throughout the year.
1. We had a field that was going to be used for hay that didn’t get cut due to many days of rain and an over abundance of shale rock sticking out of the ground. This is the second year we had this issue and decided fairly early in the year that our new seeding fields would produce enough hay crop for our animals over the course of the winter. We allowed the grasses to grow over the entire growing season and created a stockpile of grasses in the field. Late in the year, starting toward the first of October we started grazing the animals in this unmowed paddock. The grasses were of various heights, many of which ranging between the 8-12″ mark. Some was taller and had died off while the bottom was a thick carpet of new growth. The cattle stayed in this paddock until we got a heavy rain in November that caused some severely muddy areas that were starting to freeze and creating a hazard for the cows. They were shifted out of this paddock on November 27th.
2. Cattle that have been raised to graze WILL graze when given the chance. The Irish Dexters we have here are natural grazers, so it makes sense to us to run all the younger cattle (yes, even the dairy breeds) with them as much and as often as possible. Cattle learn from repetition and by example. The older cows teach the younger cows what to do. Sometimes, this has additional woes to consider when it comes to animal handling but that’s another topic. 3. I’m slowly learning that weather issues that bother me might not actually bother the cattle much at all. Here’s an example of what I’m trying to say:
4. It isn’t only the cattle that prefer to eat something out in the pasture. We have chickens that refuse to eat the “rationed” diet provided by the feed store, instead the forage for their own food.
We have 18 head of cattle right now and we are still feeding hay. We feed 2 bales that measure 4 foot x 5 foot every two to three days depending on how much the cattle graze. We’ve done some rough estimates and we are figuring about 25% of their diet is still coming from pastures every month. Hard to imagine but it’s happening. We do want to increase the amount from pastures but after dealing with the harsh reality from this winter, I don’t think we are doing too bad since I think we have had two or three days in the past three to four weeks that have been above 15 degrees. The cattle go out everyday to walk the pastures and nibble on grass…all by choice, not force. They always have hay available inside the barn. Sometimes we do roll bales out in areas that could use some additional organic matter…
Overall, I have to say that this has been an experience for me. Each generation seems to be more adaptable to the winter grazing. Maybe we are just noticing it more but I can demonstrate what I mean by viewing the photo below. All the calves are doing great and at six to seven months of age are developing well.
We will continue to monitor and push for more “grazing” days. Of course, every day the cattle graze here but we want to get more of their diet from the grassicles (frozen shards of grasses) than the current percentage. There will be some additional trials into the paddocks themselves to increase the winter fodder coming for many years to come. One thing is certain, we aren’t afraid of change or adaptability. All of us across the country have seen some extreme weather this year. Farms with animals have to pay extra attention under extreme heat and cold, not to mention high winds and heavy rains.
Here in Upstate NY, we aren’t facing winter colds as low on the thermometer as some of the others across the country but we are still facing morning temperatures of negative 6 and some wind chill factors.
As any person would, extra care needs to be taken to ensure safety in such extreme cold. This is one of the reason we make sure that our animals have good shelter and a warm place to rest. Cold stress in cattle is very difficult to deal with and should be monitored for.
Cold stress in cattle is just like the stress of hypothermia in a human. Treatment is very much the same. It involves slowly warming the body to get body temperatures elevated without reheating too quickly. Cold stress slows heart rates down and often makes animals very latargic. To rewarm an animal here on our farm, it involves many trips from the house to the barn; blankets being warmed in the dryer for several minutes and then tucked inside a coat to be run to the barn; it involves warm water (often electrolytes to prevent dehydration); and hours before an animal is back on it’s feet again. As you can imagine it is a very daunting task.
Calves are the most easily effected by cold stress. Without fat stores or long haired winter coats, they aren’t equipped to deal with these freezing temperatures. Calves can be stressed in temperatures at 40 degrees if the wind is blowing and there is high humidity. This is one reason why calf care is crucial. By closely monitoring how a calf acts and/or reacts to environmental conditions, you can determine a method of prevention. Many times, something as simple as a calf coat is enough to 1)block air movement and prevent body warmth from escaping and 2)provide a layer of protection against air moisture.
Paying attention to bedding is also crucial. A calf will not retain body heat if it is laying on damp or wet bedding. We pay extra close attention to this detail year round but will add extra bedding with the use of additional straw to keep them warm. Wheat or Oat straw is important to have within our bedding mixtures because straw is actually hollow. Standard hay is finer and is natural a solid “stalk”. The hollow core of the straw will absorb body heat and help retain the heat. We double load bedding area with straw during colder months to ensure that the animal is nested down inside…much like the shape of a dog bed.
What happens if the bedding and a coat aren’t enough? Sometimes we use heat lamps. The heat lamps, just like the ones used for keeping baby chicks warm, create a warm area under the lamp. Most often, this step will assist a calf from getting cold stress.
Have we had animals with cold stress? Yes, we have. Last, we had a couple of calves group housed within the main area of our barn. We provided them with thick sawdust bedding and lots of straw in one area inside the barn. Unfortunately, overnight on a sub-zero night one of the calf decided to be a jerk and keep the other calf off the bedding. Calves do get territorial from time to time and this does happen. We did not anticipate it happening with two calves over a very large area…but it did. The calf rejected from the bedding then laid down on the concrete floor. Needless to say, as she slept her body temperature dropped and continued to do so until I made my way to the barn.
After seperating the calves into different areas and getting her off the concrete floor onto good bedding…I started treatment for hypothermia. Warming blankets every 20 minutes, dribbling warm electrolytes into her mouth because she had minimal body function and a visit from the vet to make sure I was doing the right thing. The vet administered a shot of Vitamin B and told me to keep slowly warming her the way I was. Proudly, I can say that over the course of 12 hours, her body temperature elevated back to normal and she was back on her feed drinking and eating normally again. Today, she is one of my favorite girls and will be having her first calf this coming spring.
What are we doing different this year? Well, we have a calf that is just days old now hanging out with me inside. With zero fat stores, a wet and slimy newborn coat and the temperatures continuing to drop…we were keeping close watch when he started to show signs of hypothermia with uncontollable shaking that didn’t stop. Not wanting to expose him to the other cattle yet…one option remained. He is a good boy. He lays on a blanket (with an absorbtion pad much like those used for puppy training). He comes into the living room a couple times a day to jump and run around so he stays flexible. When the weather gets warmer, we will start getting him used to cooler temperatures and slowly start working him back to the barn a little more each day until he is back in the barn full time.
Is this the right way? Maybe not…but with me being unable to do some of the normal barn activities, I feel this was the best choice for his chance of survival. Personally, I rather enjoy the little guy being around. I will miss him when he goes back to the barn.
They say the life of a farmer slows down in winter. I beg to differ. Winter time is usually the time we catch up on reading, sit through forage classes and plan out for the coming year. This year isn’t much different for me other than I am reading more on Holistic Land Management and taking some additional business and financial planning classes online. The extra course work, which takes a couple hours per week per class, really isn’t that much but it still takes time.
I have some other classes that I am taking too. Ones on the food system in the US and another on human nutrition. Why am I taking these classes you ask? Looking at from my perspective, I feel as a farmer who works extensively with consumers about food production, it’s my job to be as informed as possible about how food impacts choices when it comes to how you eat. It’s also important for me to know and be able to express how food moves and travels because you never know someday we might be selling our goods all across the US. As for the business and financial planning classes, no matter how you want to look at farming or agriculture in general…it’s still a business where we need to make sure that we are planning and spending funds appropriately but also ensuring that we are making enough money to stay afloat too.
Farming doesn’t have the profitability of many other jobs but it is rewarding in other ways. That’s one reason why it’s important to look at management from a Holistic standpoint since those methods also take a look at lifestyle too.
On top of classes, I am still doing all of the same stuff…dealing with frozen water, cold stress in cattle, feeding hay bales, changing bedding, filling water jugs several times a day, gathering eggs, feeding chickens, caring for calves, keeping the fires going, cooking the old style home cooked meals and still trying to keep up with laundry, dishes and housework.
Life doesn’t slow down for much on the farm. Sometimes we are forced to take breaks from the daily routine due to illness (and believe me, I have to be SUPER ill to keep me away from the barn) but it isn’t often. Even if we aren’t doing the manual labor involved for the farm, there are still other things we do. Research, reading and formulating crop charts, rotational grazing map or looking through seed catalogs…there is always something that can be done.
I have been down and out for a couple of days with one of those illnesses that prevents me from standing too much…but I still didn’t miss the birth of the first calf of 2013. I even managed to capture a video!
I didn’t get to stay out there too long and I am thankful for a cow that is awesome about birthing. I missed the first steps and the first suckle, which happen to be some of my favorite moments on the farm. It’s rather depressing to miss such moments too but, sometimes we have to take care of our own health first or we won’t be any good for anything at all for a very long time, if ever again. So for now, I will deal with my winter blues the best way I know how…learning, researching and communicating via books and the internet. I have to say, I have had some awesome conversations over the phone too about our grazing plans, the success we have had and why I think it’s important for others to consider rotational grazing. Being down isn’t all bad…it just takes some adapting.
I will write more soon about extreme animal care and welfare. I want to give some details about how we cope with winter months when temperatures hover around ZERO with freezing cold wind chill factors, what we do to ensure animal safety during winter, and how grazing has also been incorporated during the winter months. I may have to write up a series of articles but, I think it’s important that people see just how much care and planning goes into animal care during extreme weather.

Even though the temperatures are above freezing already this morning, at a whole 32 degrees…It sure hasn’t been that way for the past two or three days.
On Friday, we got hit with extremely high winds with some gusts over 40 mph and snow. I don’t mind the snow. I actually think it’s good to get some snow. Especially when the ground is already so saturated from all of this strange weather we have had this year. Buffalo, which is about a three hour drive from here, is 40 inches below their average snow fall accumulations for this season. We have had more rain than I can ever recall and there have been days in January that have days in the 40-50 degree marks.
But on Saturday, the thermometer decided to plunge. It was 9 degrees out there when Mr. Farmer went out to do morning chores.
He had a few problems getting out little milking pump started but, everything else went alright. No frozen water lines, no cold animals and no sludge for oil like I had yesterday morning when I went out.
Sunday morning brought a headache, sore muscle and stress. One of our calves got cold stress. Cold stress in a calf is very dangerous. It is actually a form of hypothermia. The poor girl was our there shaking like a leaf in the breeze. She wouldn’t eat or drink. Having to bottle/force feed a five month old animal isn’t the easiest thing in the world. I didn’t want her to get dehydrated and I also know that giving her warm liquids is a good way to warm her up from the inside out.
After discovering that my girl was so cold. I decided to take a peek at the thermometer again. It turned out to be a big mistake when I pulled it up on my truck when I was headed to go pick up our weekly feed.
After the half hour feed trip, I had to work on getting the water lines unthawed. During all that, I had to keep checking on the heifer calf, making trips to the house to warm up blankets for her. Then the milker pump needed fixing. Mr. Farmer put on a different motor, cleaned it all up and warmed the oil (which turned out to be the only issue).
Then we cut firewood due to the fact that we were burning through lots of extra. All of those winds seemed to find yet more cracks in the walls of the house. At one point, the whole house was at 51 degrees. Thankfully, we didn’t have any frozen lines. We built a fire in the fireplace for added warmth but only ended up with temps around 60.
The chickens stayed nice and toasty inside of the chicken barn with their heat lamps. Believe it or not…they actually ALL laid an egg yesterday too. That was a whole boat load of eggs and more than my poor little bag could handle. I had eggs in my coat pockets, the front pouch on my hoodie and a couple in my hat along with the one’s in the bag as I raced hatless to the house! 45 eggs in total.
My fingers and toes still hurt from frost bite but things are looking better for the time being. I guess that eventually, we will all pull through this and be alright. At least, I sure hope so. And here I was hoping for a better, even start to 2012. So far, everything has been full of severe swings of ups and downs…one positive thing, it has to get better from here!
I try to find the good in everything. No point in focusing on the negative all the time…one of the reasons I rarely watch any other news than AgDay. With the leaves gone of the trees and the grass slowly turning brown too, I turn to other things in nature that I like. I like watching the sun come up on a frosty morning as the rays just start hitting the crystal and you can see every tiny detail along the edge of a blade of grass. It works the same for those mornings when we had a smidge of snow overnight.
The animals are usually very quiet at that time of day. You might hear the rooster crow or the flap of turkey wings here on our farm but usually the only other sounds you hear are the wild birds chirping their good morning to the sun. As crazy as it may seem, that is my favorite time of day. I take my coffee cup (insulated of course) out while I do my morning chores. I have been known to be found leaning on the side of the barn, hands curled around my cup and bundled in about four layers of clothes watching the sun crest over the horizon.
Everyone else changes their clocks, gets an extra hour of rest but not me. I still get up before the sun. I live somewhere where the old adages of “red sky in the morning, sailors take warning” doesn’t seem to apply. We have a red sky every morning. Of course, we also have the most spectacular sunsets too. At sunset, I am usually back in the barn again or close to it. There is nothing as peaceful as watching the sun sink below or peek over the horizon. It paints the clouds in the sky in spectacular colors.
The orange of the morning sky makes everything look warmer with hints of orangy-gold.
Farming life isn’t always about the hard work of feeding animals, cleaning barns or harvesting crops. There are those little moments that only country living can supply. To me, farming isn’t only about the animals, it’s about a way of life. Some people thrive in this environment. I am one of them. I could tell you about countless others that feel that way too. We don’t really care about fashion trends, unless maybe it’s for a new pair of boots. We don’t care what the latest celebrated gossip is. The things we care about the most are our animals and the weather. Needless to say, those are fairly time consuming and the rest…well, we take it one day at a time.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Monday’s could be the easy day of the week…The day when you slowly transition back into the work week! It never works that way though, does it?
Uggg. Today has just been one of those days. We woke up this morning to more snow! I am starting to wonder just when it is going to stop…June maybe?!?! 🙂
All kidding aside, it has been one hell of a morning. The phone has been ringing off the hook and with each phone call, it breeds two or three more! I am tired and ready for a break!
This morning has been crammed with phone calls, one after another all morning long. I sit here now, taking my lunch break, typing on the computer to relax my brain for just a few minutes. I work on several different levels when it comes to work. Right now the top one is project manager for Broome Biomass. I have devoted my life over the past few years to developing the marketing strategy and the business model for the company. In the course of doing so, I have become a marketing agent for other companies that are looking to sell biomass products. It keeps me very busy and at times can become extremely frustrating.
I think the thing that makes it very difficult is trying to play the balancing act and do so many things at once…It is very much like farming! Very rewarding but it doesn’t pay very well! 🙂 I do love everything that I have done and look forward to everything that I will be able to do in the future to promote agriculture into the renewable energy world in a real world working environment.
I am off again to work on the farm. Time to mix up my own special blend of chicken feed and to muck the barns out. The fun never stops! Have a blessed day!
The old saying goes that if March comes in like a lion, it will leave like a lamb. Here we are mid-month and March has already dumped recorded snows. Now today, we have high winds and heavy rain.
The rain is melting the snow away, but it is going to cause flooding. Our barn floor is already under water. Partly because of the broken roof on part of it and partly because the ground has a down hill slope that leads right into the barn. It is a nasty mess every where you try to take a step. Snow build up here, ice over there and mud in all the drives and walk areas. I managed to get drenched through this morning while working on chores too.
One thing though….I don’t regret or wish things were any different. Some people go spend a hundred bucks on shower heads so when they take showers it’s like standing in a rain storm. Me…I just step outside! Conservation at it’s finest. 🙂 All kidding aside, the one thing I really wish different is that someone could turn up the heat on the water falling from the heavens just a little. Then again, there is nothing like a cold shower to wake you right up in the morning!
I will be posting another blog later today. Since yesterday was my step-daughter’s birthday and the only thing she wanted was an old-school cheesecake. I have decided to share an old fashioned recipe that I have made in the past.
One thing I do want to make known, I use old school recipes that are loaded full of fats and whole milks. You remember…the recipes your Grandma used back when she made goodies. I am sorry but there is nothing like a good ol’ homemade pie crust made with lard instead of the processed junk we buy in a can to use (shortening). If I ever do use shortening, especially for pie crusts, I use the butter flavor Crisco. And…Paula from Paula’s Home Cooking Show is my fav! I love to listen to her talk and ohhhh does she savor the taste of the foods she cooks. Now you know what I act like when I fix something really good to eat…I just don’t have that southern drawl! I do love food!
Since I will be posting recipes, I will make sure to note variations that can be used to reduce the fat content. And I will also note for those people who are lactose intolerant or just can’t have milk like me some alternatives that I have tried and seemed to work well.
I am off to get some paperwork accomplished and work on securing a contract for the biomass right now. Hope that you are all sitting in the sun, soaking up the sunshine and thinking of sending some our way soon! God Bless.
It seems that Mother Nature is very upset with the United States lately. Especially the east coast! Just what did we do wrong to make her send all this snow our way?
The snow totals were some where around two feet within our area. We have no way of knowing here on the farm due to the winds that blow the snow completely away in one area to dump it in another. Most of which I think landed in front of the front door.
At 11 pm two nights ago, it was already difficult to push the screen door open on the front of the house. About a total of 10 inches had fallen at that point. By 5 am, there was about three feet stacked in front of that same door. You couldn’t even budge the door more than a few inches. By 7 am, the drift in front of the garage door was approximately chest height and about 4 feet high. I had to dig a path through the drift to get out into the driveway to get to the furnace and the front porch! After shoveling about 100 feet of packed, heavy wet snow and an hour of my time…I could open the front door and atleast get to the wood pile to fill the furnace.
At about 8 am, the dairy farmer from up the hill came down with his loader and cleared out the driveway! Glad he did and very thankful for atleast clearing the way just in case we needed to get out. About 9, we finally made it to the barn and got the tractor out to do some more snow moving. Mr. Farmer cleared out the area in front of the barn doors and room enough to manuveur the four wheeler around. By 11 am, I was so exhausted I think I could have slept for the remainder of the day….but, guess what! No chance of that. There was still paperwork and emails that had to be taken care of.
After spending much of the day shoveling and a few hours working on computer stuff, it was time to do chores all over again. Mr. Farmer took the tractor back out and plowed a path to get to the chicken barn. It wasn’t fully cleared out, but definately easier to walk in than snow up to your knees! All of the animals faired alright but none of them wanted to spend anytime out in the snow. The poor chickens stood in the barn door looking at the expanse of white and decided that being in the barn under the lamp was better than freezing their feet off.
They did come out today…to hop over the snow banks to play and scratch around on the areas that are bare ground! You should have seen the group of them that had gotten over a snow drift and couldn’t figure out how to get back across without stepping in the snow. Anyone looking for a new business…chicken shoes for winter is a recommendation! 🙂
The cows loved the sun and mild temperatures today. They really seemed to enjoy sucking up all that vitamin D from the sunshine…Now just if we can get rid of all this snow! The turkey hens are still setting on their eggs…which will hopefully hatch out a couple of poults by the end of this week! I am so excited. Spring is around the corner and that means new calves, chicks and poults! The things I love the best about farming!!!!!
